Thinking about seeing a counsellor but not sure what actually happens in the room? You’re not alone, and you don’t need to have it all figured out before you walk in.
Starting counselling takes courage, and it’s normal to feel nervous. Most of that nervousness comes from not knowing what to expect. So here’s what a first session at Agapé Counselling usually looks like.
Before you arrive
When you book, whether through the contact form or a free 15-minute consultation, you’ll get the practical details: where to go (or how to join if we’re meeting online), how long the session runs, and anything you might like to bring. You don’t need to prepare anything. If it helps, you can jot down a few things on your mind, but it’s fine to arrive with nothing at all.
The first few minutes
We’ll begin with a bit of settling in. I’ll explain how counselling works, how I handle confidentiality, and the few situations where privacy has limits, such as a risk of serious harm. You’re welcome to ask me anything at this stage. There are no silly questions.
Talking about what brought you here
Next, I’ll invite you to share what’s been going on, as much or as little as feels comfortable. You set the pace. Some people start with a clear reason for seeking counselling, and others only know that something feels “off”. Both are fine places to begin.
I’ll mostly listen and ask questions to understand what life looks like for you right now: what’s difficult, what’s been helpful, and what you’d like to be different. You won’t be pushed to share anything you’re not ready to talk about.
What if I cry, or don’t know what to say?
Both are completely normal. Tears are welcome, and so are silences. You don’t need to find the “right” words. Part of my job is to help you find them, without any rush.
Working out where to from here
Towards the end of the session, we’ll talk about what you’d like to get out of counselling and whether I seem like a good fit. Fit matters. Counselling works best when you feel comfortable with the person you’re working with, and it’s okay to take time to decide. If you’d like to continue, we’ll agree on what that could look like, including how often to meet. If I think someone else would suit you better, I’ll say so.
What counselling isn’t
I won’t judge you, and I won’t tell you what to do. Counselling is a supported space to understand yourself better and work out what steps feel right for you. You stay in charge of your own life.
